Janitors in military installations developing people mover and or mining transporters on copper poor worlds, often enough stole a white laboratory coat to access the transporter when it was completed but not fully operational and began committing time travel crimes. Generally they took over the military and redesigned the uniforms to feature square rank insignia which essentially pointed their other selves to more generally travel towards times featuring reel-to-reel tape recorders, which were a major technological advancement, and the square military rank insignia referenced their control buttons. Because of the white laboratory coat, the criminals often enough added white military armor to distract from people clothed in white, for visual searches.
